To Study Air Compressor

 OBJECTIVE:-

To Study the air compressor.

APPARATUS:-

Reciprocating air compressor, rotary air compressor and centrifugal air compressor.

THEORY:-

An air compressor is a device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume.

It is a special type of gas compressor which serves the purpose of compressing atmospheric pressure and raising its pressure to use for different purposes.

There are mainly four common types of air compressor and they are:-

1.Rotary screw compressor:- It uses a rotary - type positive displacement mechanism.It is commonly used to replace piston compressors where large volumes of high pressure air are needed, either for large industrial applications or to operate high power air tools such as jack hammer and impact wrenches.

2. Reciprocating Air Compressors:- It is also known as position compressor. It is a positive- displacement compressor that uses piston drives by the crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure.

3.Arial Compressor:- It is a gas compressor that can continually pressurized gases. It is a rotating, airfoil basad compressor in which the gas or working fluid principally flows parallel to the axis of rotation, or axially.

4.Centrifugal Air Compressor:- It achieves a pressure rise by adding kinetic energy to continuous flow of fluid through the roster or impeller.

It is a sub- class of a dynamic axisymmetric work absorbing turbo machinery.

Important parts of a reciprocating air compressor are as follows:

1. Cylinder Head,

2. Suction/ Intake valve,

3. Delivery valve,

4. Cylinder liner/ Wall/ cooling water jacket,

5. Compressor casing,

6. Crank case,

7. Piston,

8. Connecting rod,

9. Crank shaft,

10. Main Bearings,

11. Bed plate or Bottom structure,

12. Foundation,

13. Lubricating Oil strainer,

14. Stage relief valves,

15. Intercoolers,

16. After-coolers,

17. Suction filter, and other minor components.
